Henry has had another amazing month! We had an awesome Easter and got to spend time with both sides of the family to celebrate which, of course, Henry loved. Chocolate made a hefty appearance and we learned Henry actually does have a bit of an appreciation for sweets (can't imagine where he got that from!)! We decorated an "Easter bush" in the backyard, thinking this would be enough effort to celebrate the holiday at home, and assuming Henry wouldn't even notice. Quite the opposite happened- Henry was obsessed with the eggs! And when I say obsessed I'm being serious- looked out the window every morning to see them, begged to go outside to "see Henry's eggs" and was all over them when outside. It was pretty funny. Even better was that when we finally had our Easter egg hunt with my family he initially couldn't care less what was in them!
Henry's school routine is going great. After a couple weeks of rough mornings, Henry turned the page on week three and simply said "bye bye Momma" when Julie dropped him off. The teachers were surprised at all the letters he already knew and were later wooed by his talent at blowing kisses:). Our charmer! He has lots of room to grow and we think they are the perfect teachers for the job. Swimming class on the other hand is a little more rocky. Henry is not a big fan of going underwater and the concept of "blowing bubbles" is still lost on him. I still feel like it's a good learning experience for him and I'm still hopeful he'll be begging to swim this summer!
Henry is sleeping awesome in his big boy bed. He continues on with the same pre-sleep routine (interior designing/furniture moving, reading all books, etc), and we feel good about giving him this freedom and opportunity for downtime and to "self soothe". He's really getting comfortable with the change and though there are nap times/nights that aren't perfect, most are really good. GoGo helped furnish the room with a new polar bear crossing sign and a monkey poster from the KC Zoo (which he LOVES). He really digs the posters and is so proud to tell you what they are!
We started hanging out a ton in the backyard thanks to a donated sandbox (thanks again Sarah R!!), a picnic table (thanks M&D!) and some sidewalk chalk (thanks Jim and Amanda!). Turns out, this combination is all you need to completely entertain Henry for hours! Julie and I (well, mostly Julie!) have loved up out backyard by planting flowers, herbs and veggies and are loving enjoying the space and relaxing time as a family.
We celebrated my sister, Colleen, (aka Aunt CoCo) this past weekend for graduating with her PharmD! Lots of family visited which meant lots of fun for Henry! New word learned... "party!!" thanks to my Aunt Barb! I fear this is foreshadowing, and crack up every time he says it:) We could not be more proud of Colleen and all of her hard work over the last 5 years. Despite the craziness of her school schedule she managed to bring two beautiful children in to the world, support her family (including countless visits to the hospital- meal in hand- for us during some really difficult times) and juggles everything with such grace. We were honored to be her cheerleaders on her special day- and celebrated all weekend!
With the extra time off together we also celebrated Mother's Day a little early. Depending on the day I vacillate between feeling like such a rookie to having this motherhood thing down pat. With Henry comes extra curve balls every now and then, but overall I feel like he's eased us into this role with smiles and allowed us to really soak in every moment. I still remember the day we found out we were pregnant after all the planning and wishing. I feel like the luckiest gal around that Henry is our son and so proud to be one of his mommas!
More to come soon!
-Kate, Julie and Henry
