Henry has officially introduced us to the world of "urgent" medical care since we rang in the new year. He broke his clavicle after a fall down a portion of our stairs last week. After a trip to the urgent care clinic and a prescribed cute little sling to wear over his left arm for support, we were sent out the door and told to "take it easy". This past Friday, while Henry was playing in the living room, he twisted and bent his right knee back in a way that caused him a lot of pain. We were admitted from the ER shortly after it was determined he broke the femur bone in his right leg, and was scheduled for surgery for intervention the next morning.
The surgeon was able to put two flexible wire rods down the length of his femur bone for alignment and "set" the bone for healing. We were told he should not bear weight on that leg for the next three weeks, should be walking normally by six weeks and back to normal activity by three months. Logistically thinking, I have no clue what these guidelines are going to translate to in a four year-old! Definitely a lot of thinking outside the box and alternatives to our usual activities, but guidance from our trusty physical therapists to come!
It has been a much different hospitalization than we're used to (happily), but Henry has been in a good amount of pain from the injury. He's doing amazing, and we are reintroducing the "french fries and shake" diet usually requested during the course of hospitalization when we start hearing statements like Henry "just needs to eat":) We expect to be discharged once the team agrees on a safe plan and physical therapy and DME needs are arranged. Of course the wonderful Cardiology team has also followed his case and popped their heads in to give us words of encouragement. Did I mention well cared for?!
Luckily I was able to catch GG and Papap on Friday while we were waiting in the ED before they left for their originally planned weekend trip and they are caring for Gus. Gus has spent time playing with the "big kids", cousin Leo and Finn, and has been entertaining at our place in our absence:) He was dressed in red and blue in order to cheer the Jayhawks to a win Saturday over Texas Tech with Papa and the Laffertys- Good times!
Not the way we planned to spend the weekend, but happy that he is in good hands and recovering. As always, we wish we could take some of this hardship for him, but he continues to amaze us with his strength. Thank you for your love and support as we get this boy back on his feet (literally)!
More updates soon!
